Q 1 Dr. Sadao was compelled by his duty as a doctor to help the enemy soldier. What made Hana, his wife, sympathetic to him in the face of open defiance from the domestic staff?
Ans: Dr. Sadao's first priority was to save a dying man. It mattered little whether the patient was a friend or a foe. Japan was at war with America. The prisoner of war Tom was an American. The kind-hearted lady. Dr. Sadao's wife Hana, developed a natural sympathy for the wounded and dying enemy. She had to face open defiance from the domestic staff. But she was not provoked. She helped her husband in performing an operation on him. 

Q.2 Why did the messenger come to Sadao's home?
Ans.  The messenger came to Sadao's home to tell him to treat old General. He had an attack again. He could be operated by Sadao.


Q.3 Who was the Sadao? Where was the house?
Ans. Dr. Sadao was a Japanese surgeon who had been educated in America. His house was on a spot of the Japanese coast. It was set upon a narrow beach outlined with bent pines. 

Q.5 Why did Hana and Sadao save the life of the American inspite of their hate?
Ans. Sadao and Hana were doctor and very kind also. When they saw the man lying on the beach. They pitied on him. When they found that he was an American, they both were full of hate. But they cannot leave the man in the bad condition. Due to their duty as a doctor they healed his wounds. They operated him. They knew that they would be arrested but they considered that saving the life of the American was more important. 

Q.6 What was the effect on the members of the family on the arrival of the messenger?
Ans. When the messenger came Sadao's wife Hana was very much afraid of Other members were also fearful. They all thought that General had come to know about the American.


Q.7 What was Sadao's achievements as a doctor?
Ans. Sadao was a dutiful dedicated doctor. He was a famous surgeon and expert in his art. Even General believed him that he can operate him successfully. 

Q.8 Will Dr. Sadao be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy?
Ans.  No, Dr. Sadao will not be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy because nobody had seen him there. His servants won't disclose it. And he will tell it to the General who is being treated by him.


Q.9. Sadao was guilty or not? Write in your own words.
Ans. Sadao was not guilty from the humanity point of view. He was not treacherous to his own country as well. He was a doctor. When he saw a man who was very close to death he treated him. He risked his own life. He was full of hate while operating him. But he could not leave the man in that bad condition. He was a true doctor. His services and duty were beyond the borders. Sadao was safeguard of humanity and pity. 

Q. 10 Why was Sadao not sent to abroad with troops?
Ans. Sadao's services were useful for the country. He was perfecting a major discovery. It would render wounds entirely clean. Only Sadao can operate the old General. 

Q.11 Write about the character of Sadao?
Ans.  Sadao was the only son of his parents. He was sent to study surgery and medicine to America. He was very famous doctor. The General had a deep faith in him. He also ignored the crime of Sadao. When Japan and America were at war he helped the prisoner of war. He was not a treacher. He considered that duty of a doctor is beyond the borders. He was ready to sacrifice his own life for the sake of his patient. Tom the prisoner of war well said about him if there are persons like Sadao there is not any need of war. 

Q.12 On what condition Hana was married to Sadao?
Ans. Hana was married to Sadao as she was Japanese. Sadao told all about Hana to his father. Then their marriage was arranged in a Japanese way.



Q.13. What do you know about Hana?
Ans  Hana was a young, beautiful and kind woman. She always ready to do what her husband ask her. They both love each other. She hated the American and wanted to throw back into the sea. She did not want to take risk. She was ready to take risk due to her husband's act of kindness.



Q.14. How does humanity gets victory over all other factors as we see Sadao in this story?
Ans. Sadao was a true doctor. He was kind and full of humanity He was very much dedicated as a doctor. When he saw a man very close to death, he forget that the man was his enemy. He was acting as a traitor in the eyes of his autocratic king. He knew that he may be put to death. He risked his life and treated the war prisoner. Service to humanity, kindness, pity all these do not have any boundary. Thus we see that the personal causes are left behind and humanity wins.


Q 15 What do you know about the man treated by Sadao?
Ans The man was an American prisoner of war. He was washed out to the front of Sadao's house. He had a bullet wound in his back. He had run away from there.


Q.16 What will Dr. Sadao do to get rid of the man (enemy soldier)?
Ans. Dr. Sadao will provide him a boat with enough food and clothes in it. He will help him to reach a nearby island. From there, he will be able to take a Korean fishing boat and escape to freedom. Thus, Dr. Sadao will get rid of the man.


Q. 17. How can you say that Hana was a dutiful wife?
Ans. Hana and Sadao met in America at the house of a professor. They loved each other very much. Hana once did not want to help the man. She hated him. When she saw that the man was close to death she did what her husband asked her to do. She also risked her own life. She did not care that she was washing the wounds of her enemy. She did her best. She helped Sadao in all aspects. Thus we can say that she was a good dedicated wife.
